The callsign W4FD has a rich tradition in the amateur radio community. Currently, it is the callsign of the New River Valley Radio Club, Inc. This callsign was previously held by fellow ACARC club member Harry A. Mills, Jr. (ex-KK4X) and by his father Harry A. Mills, Sr., the co-founder of the Controlled-Current Distribution Antenna. Both were engineers and high speed CW operators. The Ashe County Amateur Radio Club uses this callsign during ARRL Field Day (hence W4FieldDay) and other special events.
